I hadn&#8217;t given him much consideration before, but I was actually impressed by his understanding of some important intellectual property issues (particularly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lessig.org\/blog\/archives\/001554.shtml#001554\">the problems with the pharmaceutical patent regime<\/a><a class=\"webcache\" title=\"Locally Cached Version\" href=\"\/adam\/cache\/politics\/\/john_edwards.txt\/retrieve\/http:\/\/www.lessig.org\/blog\/archives\/001554.shtml\">&#183;<\/a>. In his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lessig.org\/blog\/archives\/001559.shtml#001559\">final entry<\/a><a class=\"webcache\" title=\"Locally Cached Version\" href=\"\/adam\/cache\/politics\/\/john_edwards.txt\/retrieve\/http:\/\/www.lessig.org\/blog\/archives\/001559.shtml\">&#183;<\/a>, he squarely addressed the importance of open source licensing: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p> When a government official stepped forward and opposed an international forum on open source, that was a mistake&#8212;just as it would be a mistake to oppose a discussion of proprietary licensing. As I said, the role of government is to establish a level playing field, not pick a winner. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> It probably helps that he represents the home state of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redhat.com\">Red Hat<\/a><a class=\"webcache\" title=\"Locally Cached Version\" href=\"\/adam\/cache\/politics\/\/john_edwards.txt\/retrieve\/http:\/\/www.redhat.com\">&#183;<\/a>, but so far he&#8217;s the only candidate who seems to know anything about the Free Software movement. <\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lessig.org\/blog\/archives\/2003_07.shtml\">Howard Dean was also a guest blogger back in July<\/a><a class=\"webcache\" title=\"Locally Cached Version\" href=\"\/adam\/cache\/politics\/\/john_edwards.txt\/retrieve\/http:\/\/www.lessig.org\/blog\/archives\/2003_07.shtml\">&#183;<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lessig.org\/blog\/archives\/2003_08.shtml\">Dennis Kucinich in August<\/a><a class=\"webcache\" title=\"Locally Cached Version\" href=\"\/adam\/cache\/politics\/\/john_edwards.txt\/retrieve\/http:\/\/www.lessig.org\/blog\/archives\/2003_08.shtml\">&#183;<\/a>. Both <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.deanforamerica.com\">Dean<\/a><a class=\"webcache\" title=\"Locally Cached Version\" href=\"\/adam\/cache\/politics\/\/john_edwards.txt\/retrieve\/http:\/\/blog.deanforamerica.com\">&#183;<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.denniskucinich.us\">Kucinich<\/a> have &#8220;personal&#8221; blogs as well.<\/a> Although it&#8217;s all a little gimmicky, much of the blog writing has a slightly more sophisticated flavour than what you see in the debates, campaign speeches, and TV ads.
