The Tobacco clinic is a great opportunity to work on research and writing skills. It is set up much like coop. Students get research/writing assignments and when they are finished they move onto something else. The class meets once a week for two hours where you listen to lectures on the history of the tobacco suits – it is actually really interesting. There is no final paper and no exam. Some people have many little assignments and some end up on just one for the entire quarter (that is what I did). The assignments are widely varied (for example, my assignment was on the law suits against the fast food industry and how they relate to the tobacco suits, but others had somewhat more traditional research assignments). The class is 6 credits but don’t let that intimidate you. While the work is time consuming, you can pretty much go at your own pace (at least that was my experience). I highly recommend it.
