Be very afraid. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.darpa.mil\/iao\/TIASystems.htm\">Total Information Awareness<\/a> may be coming soon to a theatre near you. <\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.darpa.mil\/iao\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/images.rosi-kessel.org\/office_information_awareness.png\" class=\"insetcenter\" \/><\/a> <\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p> There&#8217;s a lot of rhetoric around &#8220;TIA&#8221;, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/ref\/opinion\/SAFIRE-BIO.html\">William Safire<\/a>&#8217;s slightly misleading editorial <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2002\/11\/14\/opinion\/14SAFI.html\">&#8220;You Are a Suspect&#8221;<\/a> in today&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\">New York Times<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.majcher.com\/nytview.html\">use this to anonymize your registration<\/a>). The scariest thing, I think, is not that this system might work, but that it might even be attempted. Although it would certainly further compromise our eroding constitutional (privacy) rights, it would also represent a terrible waste of money and security resources. <\/p>\n<p> Although I would have preferred for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.minorityreport.com\">Minority Report<\/a> to answer the question, &#8220;Would we want a system of total surveillance if it worked perfectly?&#8221;, instead it answered the question, &#8220;Would we want a system of total surveillance if it made errors?&#8221; The first question is more difficult, the second more realistic. And it&#8217;s this latter question that applies particularly to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hpoindexter.com\/jmarlan.htm\">Admiral John Poindexter<\/a>&#8217;s &#8220;Total Information Awareness&#8221; and related programs. This technology may work fairly well in Hollywood, but in practice, has anyone ever maintained a database even remotely this large with any semblance of accuracy? <\/p>\n<table width=\"100%\" cellpadding=\"9\">\n<tr>\n<td> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trond.com\/brazil\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/images.rosi-kessel.org\/brazil.png\" class=\"insetcenter\" \/><\/a> <\/td>\n<td valign=\"middle\"> The <span class=\"smallcaps\">Office of Information Awareness<\/span> sounds an awful lot like the <span class=\"smallcaps\">Office of Information Retrieval<\/span> to me. <\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Be afraid.
