Slate · is running this entertaining and mildly insightful analysis · of the recent television advertisments by IBM promoting Linux · (I’d normally say GNU/Linux, but the ads just say “Linux”). If you haven’t seen the ads, check them out. Then read the commentary.

Will Linux be the springboard for world peace and understanding, or will it be crushed beneath the heels of greedy modern-day industrialists whose narrow view of progress focuses only on their own coffers? I don’t know…but I think that kid in the commercial does.

I don’t know…but I think that kid in the commercial does.
The kid doesn’t know anything. He is a deaf mute who has a Gump-like knack for being in all the right places at the right time. He is not the messiah.
