WebLoyalty.com aka WLI*ReservationRewards Is A Scam

Update August 9, 2009: Absurdly high number of comments and hits on this page. The latest is reported in this CNET article.

Update March 8, 2009: 2,653 comments. Plus, there has been a settlement of the class action lawsuit: Webloyalty Settlement.

Update September 13, 2006: Webloyalty… sued.

Update May 7, 2006: I get a lot of email asking me “how do I get them to stop charging me?” My entry below, and about 1,000 of the comments, tell you how, but here’s the short version: call 800-732-7031 and tell them you want all your money back. Do not give up until they refund all of it.

Update July 25, 2006: Nearly 1,300 comments and counting…

I recently noticed a charge on my credit card bill for “WLI*RESERVATIONREWARDS 800-7327031” CT for $9. I had no idea what the charge was, so I called 1-800-732-7031 and finally figured it out. Below is a slightly edited letter I’ve sent to the Massachusetts Attorney General Consumer Protection office. If nothing else, I hope this weblog entry shows up on a search for this company, the phone number, or Vincent D’Agostino (the President of the company) and Mary O’Reilly (the customer service director). (My apologies to any Vincent D’Agostinos or Mary O’Reillys out there who aren’t related to this scam).

On November 2, 2004, I purchased airline tickets from the website onetravel.com.

On my most recent credit card bill, I noticed a charge for $9 for a transaction on 12/2 posted on 12/5 for WLI*RESERVATIONREWARDS 800-7327031 CT. I had no idea what the charge was, and was certain I hadn’t signed up for any “reservation rewards” program, so I did a web search for the phone number for the item. Apparently, many other people have had the same exact charge for the same item without ever having ordered it.

I called the company to dispute the charge, and they insisted that I had signed up for some kind of rewards service when I purchased airline tickets. I insisted that I had never signed up for any such service, but they claimed they had sent me three emails confirming the service, which apparently is a monthly subscription for $9 per month which gives you discounts on some products or services online.

When I complained that I was sure I had never signed up for any such service, they said that they had “millions of satisfied customers” and that the complaints were just a few.

Since I maintain my own mail server, I was able to search back over the last 60 days of mail logs, and there was no record of any email originating from this company. Even if such an email had been caught by a spam filter, it would still show up in the mail log. I am thus certain that they never sent any confirmation emails.

Finally, I threatened to contact my state attorney general, and at that point they agreed to refund the $9 and cancel my subscription.

I checked the Connecticut Better Business Bureau website for this company, which goes under a dozen aliases, and saw that there have been many complaints along similar lines.

I am a computer programmer and intellectual property attorney specializing in Internet law, and thus I am not a naive Internet consumer—while I realize that some people may accidentally sign up for services they didn’t intend to purchase, I am certain that I never did this. I believe this company is operating fraudulently, and their “millions of satisfied customers” are people who do not scrutinize their credit card bills carefully, since a $9 charge is easy to miss.

I would like the Consumer Protection division of the Attorney General’s Office to look into this problem as I am sure it affects many Massachusetts Citizens.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me for more information. The Connecticut Better Business Bureau also lists the following address for the company in question:

Webloyalty.com, Inc.
101 Merritt Seven, 7th Floor (Corporate Offices)
Norwalk, CT 06851

This doesn’t speak very well of onetravel.com, although I hear expedia.com and other providers have similar dealings with webloyalty.com.

I’d like to think the web could ultimately prevent more fraud than it enables, but at this point I think the prognosis is bleak. Leave a comment below if you’ve had a similar experience with this company.

Update: This site includes dozens—maybe hundreds—of reports of the same problem with this company.

I, too, was hit with 12 dollars a month charge from this company. I just realized it today as I was looking at my bank statement it has charged me the last two months. this is a SCAM and is ridiculous. I will be calling today for a full refund.

How many products are these crooks associated with? I got taken when I purchased some roach poison, of all things. They offer a discount on your next purchase, what you are doing, according to them is authorizing them to deduct fees from your credit card. If they were required to disclose this, people would not get scammed.
You can’t even trace them through your bank, or credit card, You have to go through your search engine and type in RESERVATION REWARDS to get to their website. there you can cancel your subscription,

They have been messing me over for two years, i am actually embarrassed but money has never really been a problem, and i was never really that detailed when going over my credit cards. These guys are scum and i am surprised so many businesses run with them, when i think the amount of older people that these guy are taking advantage of it makes me red in face. These people make me feel like i am useless as an American citizen because even the people that seem like good people at first turn out shady. Calling right now, they ow me over 200 dollars.

I booked a hotel with vegas.com recently. I did not sign up for Reservation Services membership. However, I do start get e-mails from them, say I will be charged $12 on my mastercard each month, unless I call them to cancell my membership which I never join. How did they get my credit Card infomation?

I will never book anything again with vegas.com.

The class action suit against Reservation Rewards is a SCAM in itself. Only one class action suit can be filed at one time for any given company or situation. So, the company filed one against THEMSELVES to keep anyone else from making further claims. In the contract, it limits you to any further legal action, and will only return “up to 2 months worth of charges.” They will return 2 months worth of charges with a simple phone call. DO NOT sign up for the class action lawsuit. I was ripped off for over a year’s worth of charges. I went along with their little scheme, filled out all the mail-in paperwork they make you fill out, and I actually DID get my money back. The lawsuit WILL NOT return any more than 2 months worth of fees. Keep that in mind.

Reservation Rewards and anyone who works with them or for them are thieves. Plain and simple.

  8. Keizra Tyson Aug 19

I purchased movie tickets in June to see Transformers. I started getting $12 charges in July, with the most recent one being today(I was checking my bank statement). Because this was the second time, I decided to google Reservation Rewards and came across this page. This is ridiculous and makes me wary to make purchases online!! I am planning on reporting them!

    Hi
I have just found out that I was scammed by Travel plus and Resivation Rewards for $580.00 sinse 2007 till 2009

  10. Heidi Aug 24

I just found a $12.00 charge for 3 months on my bank statement for this scam. I called them and they said I signed up through a Movie ticket website. I remember purchasing and printing movie tickets several months ago, but no where did I authorize a repeating $12.00 debit to my account! Ugh! It’s cancelled now, but that really burns my butt!

  11. jeff hill Aug 27

Yep they ot me too, tricked me with an e-mail ad, thought I was gonna save
%10 on my next purshaed item from a particular cigar web sight, well when I clicked the button It took me to the cig website, but apparently that is all these crapbags neeeded to start “secretly” billing my dcard on a monthly bases.

So I called the bank and reported he transaction, bank called them, gave her a peice of my mind!

I don’t think they will be doing it again!

    My advise is:
Keep close watch of bank statements, transactions, purchases, and from where.
Avoid e-mailed adds from different co.s, SPAM IT.

I have reserched this co. and what they do is “like it or not” perfectly legal. Sheesh I’m in the wrong business, this is easy money, and these creeps are raking in he cash! Yeah I’m talking inthe millions!

I’m gonna e-mail every news broadcaster I can and report this, and if you find yourself a victim, I hope you do the same.

  12. Lesa Aug 30

They got me too! $12/month for 4 months. Not alot of money but it’s the point that they get away with this. Scammers everywhere!

  13. Mr Wilson Aug 31

I’ve been getting a charged $12 a month for 4 months. I must be paying for the upgraded “PLATINUM” service. lol.

    Jokers!

I’ll be giving them a call tomorrow to cuss someone out and get my money back

    1-800-732-7031 CT.

I just also wanted to here a reply from someone who actually utilizes this service and what discounts they get, if any. Just curious.

  14. Arnold R. Aug 31

I have been charged since May $12.00 per month for this also. I too have not signed up for anything. I live in NY. They have a button to cancel that leaves you in an endless loop of a hold to cancel. This company should be stopped. Thank you for having this posting.

  15. Kris H Aug 31

I bought software from Genie-Soft, and must have clicked on the ‘free’ offer, that also gave a ‘$15 discount’ in the purchase process. I noticed the charge two and a half months later, but thought it was part of a Visa program I’d enrolled in at about the same time. I got charged a total of $252, before I looked into it further (since Dec. 2007) shame on me, and I’m really pissed with Genie, as you can well imagine. Reservation Rewards will only refund 6 months, or $72.

Everyone who has posted here: Please go to the Better Business Bureau Website (bbb.org) and file a complaint. If enough people file complaints, hopefully we can get this place shut down. I’m sure what they’re doing is legal, but it is very shady. Think of all the elderly folks that have not noticed the charges and continue to get scammed each month. Also, you may consider filing complaints against the companies that sponsor Reservation Rewards or any other cover company of Webloyalty, such as Fandango, Orbitz, etc.

We need to do a public good and stop this place.

  17. Jason Sep 2

I recently purchased a trip on Sandals’s for a trip and believe I then got hit with this scam. $12.00 fee this month. I will be making a call to Reservation Rewards to give someone a piece of my mind as well as Sandals for selling this information….

  18. Randy Rath Sep 2

Noticed the first $12 charge at the end of July and then another today on 31-Aug. No problem to cancel and supposedly all $24 is going to be credited back – but two main points here:

    1) I had to notice the charge, investigate (call Chase and RRewards) and dispute them at a time when I should be doing a number of other things.

    2) I doubt my wife realizes she signed up for anything, mabye even thought she was doing something good (saving $$) after feeling a little guilty about paying the extra fees to buy movie tickets online.

The amount of money scammed from people simply because they don’t say no, didn’t realize they said yes or don’t notice charges and then protest is appalling.

  19. robin Sep 2

Lame… I got my money back from these thieves long ago but just rceeived the terms of the class action.

    WLI admits no wrongdoing

    Plaintiff’s lawyers awarded $2.7 million

“Class” is entitled to a refund of any money WLI kept, if they file a form demanding such. That’s it.

Wow, that is a real beatdown. If these jagoffs had scammed 1 million people per month that is over $100 million a year. Where’s our compensatory danage for the 2 hours we spent on the phone getting smokescreened by these losers before getting a refund, ad what of all the people who gave up in fustration?

Well, I get the message loud and cear. Fraud pays big in America Why work when you can steal? I’m in. Bernie Madoff, here I come!!!

  20. Gus Sep 3

Same thing happened to me, 12 dollars charged to my account and I never signed up for any reservationrewards program. I called the number 3 times and an automated system says they are unable to answer the call at this time please try again later. SCAM!!

  21. Jen in MN Sep 5

I got dinged by these thieves also. When I submitted a complaint with the BBB in CT (where the company is headquartered), Webloyalty/Complete Savings’ “legal liason” responded with a letter laying all blame with me. Jerks. If I wanted their service, why did they have to steal my CC number from a third party? The company did recredit my $12, but I’m not finished with them. I filed a complaint with the CT BBB, with the CT Attorney General’s office, with the FTC, with the FBI Internet fraud division, with Pizza Hut (it was their website that gave out my info). I also wrote US Senator Rockefeller, who is Chair of the Senate Commerce Committee, which is investigating this company. Fight back. Tell everyone you know to be careful. Make your story and voice heard. Maybe someone who can shut these thieving lying crooks down will hear. Maybe the law can be changed so that this type of “sales/marketing” tactic is illegal.

  22. Jennifer Sep 7

I just noticed a chargeby them last month, wasn’t sure what it was and hadn’t looked into it yet, this month there is yet again another charge, both have been for $12. I tried calling the number but wasn’t sure which option to choose and even if I did know who to speak with, I don’t know any information on how they got my info, what my number with them would be or anything… it just popped onto my account these past 2 months for no reason at all, nothing bought online or anything. Please if someone could help me with how to figure ths out, I’d truly truly appreciate it.

    Revelation Rewards is a SCAM!!!!

Before you are tempted to join or listen to this new MLM (they don’t claim is MLM) , company call Max Gen, which they offer a voucher called REVELATION REWARDS. Kindly take my advice to consider the following point and pit falls before you decide to join. ( This is their website ;- http://www.revelationrewards.com/). IS A SCAM!!!

I know all this because it turns out to be a SCAM for me after investing more than 5K of worthless vouchers. Please bear with me as I explain that is all why it is a CON.

    a) The most attractive Voucher inside the RM 499 voucher (Which cost only RM 35 per voucher if you are a grand master agent) are the package of 5 days 4 Nights international holiday for 2 adult including flight rebates. This trip is to Bali, Pattaya and Phuket.

Here is what they didn’t tell you or even the participants before they join as an AGENT.

    1) They will show you lots of attractive hotels in Bali, Pattaya and Phuket, BUT if you are unable to fulfill the following non- make sense term of condition, you only have 1 or 2 cheap 3- stars hotel to stay and you don’t have rights to choose.

 You must be 35 years old above only you are partly qualified to have a chance to stay in all this luxury hotels they are talking about in their website.

 Your annual income MUST BE RM 160 000 to RM 180 000 annually only you will be qualify to be place in this hotels. This means your target group of purchaser who are qualify to use this voucher will need to have an average income of RM 15 000 per month to qualify. You would ask how they know you annual income. They will check your Credit Card and even when u checks in to the hotels, they will check on your details especially on your credit cards.

 You MUST listen to 90 mins of presentation from the hotels convince you to buy their membership. People have been reported drag up to 3 hours as the hotel salesperson insists them to take the memberships. This are agent who try out the package. Please beware of that! Not to mention you have to pay RM 400 deposit fees and RM 100 booking fees before you even go for holidays. If you miss the presentation, they will forfeit your RM 400 when you try to claim.

 If you are younger than 35 years old, they will only have 1 or 2 old resorts rooms for you. For places like Pattaya or Bali, only one hotel choice is available. And the price they give can be found cheaper in http://www.agoda.com. Please compare, and Agoda even have breakfast included. The 3 star room will give u rooms that is unable to let out, means hotel rooms that are near to generator, rooms that is far from enterence, havent renovated or even have cases of death which local avoid staying in.

 The question you need to ask yourself is this, Will a 35 years old successful businessmen who have annual income of RM 15 000 per month want to go for a tour that required him to listen to 90 Mins talk, 2 tedious paper work procedure in Max Generation office, need to book 3 months ahead, NO GROUP BOOKING and have no hotel preference to choose for his family or honeymoon?

 Second questions, how many of your group of friends under 35 years old wanted to buy a voucher of RM 499 but only can stay in a cheap hotel of THB 100 less? Not to mention, you need to come personally to the office to payment or post the money with your own risk, NO Group booking , need to pay in advance RM 400 for deposit , AND RM 100 for hotel booking fees.

Last year I contacted Reservations Rewards in regards unauthorized charges to my American Express card and the charges were reversed. But Reservations Rewards continue ripping off many American consumers.

This week (9/8/2009) after review my American Express charges I notice Reservation Rewards continue making unauthorized charges once again. Please, check your credit card statements every month and write to the Better Bussiness Breuer in this regards. Let’s stop these companies from ripping off thousands of customer that believe in honesty never check their credit cards statements for fraudulent charges.

  28. Matthew Sep 11

Just figured out that the same thing happened to me. Called the number and they promptly closed my account and refunded me my money back to when the charges started in August. After investigation I realized the charges started in May. Contacted bank and filed fraud report.

  29. Zuka Sep 15

THEY DID NOT RETURN MY MONEY!!!

I realized this problem too late. They began to charge $10 a month from September 2007 and I canceled the account only in June 2009. So, I lost $220. But as I was not in US in June I couldn’t contact them on that toll-free number. I talked to them only now and they told me as I canceled the account they couldn’t find my records and they would not return the money.

I wish I did not cancel the account and with extra 2 months charge maybe I could get back all the money.

  30. NORBERT WAGONBLOTT Sep 21

I, out of the blue had a 12.00 dollar monthly charge from Reservation Rewards. The 1st time I noticed it I waited 1 month to see if it was recurring and sure enough it did. I have no idea how they do it but they apparently get everyone. I don’t know how far back they’ve charged me. This sort of thing needs to be stopped. Please contact me if additional information is needed.

  31. Eugene Sep 22

I just called those morons. Pretty much same deal – they were trying to convince me that I ordered this service. I told them that they’re lying and they canceled this whole thing for my account. Then I asked if it’s possible for me to get the money they’ve stolen back, and they told me that they’ve got too many complains as it is and that I should send them an official letter from my lawyer (so I guess threttening them with a law suit is not gonna work anymore). Damn, those guys have some balls to pull this scam off. LOL

  32. mandy Sep 25

i just saw this on my debit card statement and very livid when i looked it up and saw this websites so i just called and the lady said she would cancel for me and then i asked to give me my money back. she started giving me attitude and sarcasim and we started to argue. she called me a bitch. finally after waiting for a supervisor o got my money back. trying to figure out where this was from my husband and i faught over it and almost separated. thanks for posting they need to be stopped

  33. Margi Sep 26

We thought this might be a charge from Rapid Rewards with SWA – but realized they had been charging our account $10 for awhile now – darn those people – I never signed up for anything, never clicked anything for a $10 rebate, discount, etc. Thanks for this sight – at least I know I can get my money back.

  34. Jason Sep 28

They have gotten me for $12 for the last two months in a row.

  35. kinsorooney Sep 30

Same sad story here. Back in 2005 I purchased form 123 Inkjets and got their annoying popup message offering a 10 dollar gift certificate. I agreed just to get my order through and thought nothing of it since I had not knowingly given my CC info/ WRONG. I didn’t notice until 5 payments of $9.00 had gone through and I did the research on WLI for a phone number. I called them and got the standard “I can only give you one month back” speech and I was just thankful to have the stealing cease. Thought nothing more of it until I got a notice of this class action lawsuit.

No matter what selections of carefully worded legalese their “Customer Service Relations” folks decide to inflict upon us, this is fraud plain and simple because there has been one established unspoken rule in online purchasing from its inception. Online stores will ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS show you a screen or several screens telling you that you are about to charge your credit card when you make a purchase. And most of the time you get a printable screen detailing your purchase. Any deviation of this practice normally causes an immediate red flag to the majority of consumers and that site is never trusted again. To violate this sacred and fragile trust between the customer and the online store to the level that this has risen to must mean that this is VERY lucrative transaction in favor of the assorted online businesses affected. They simply would not jeopardize their customer base without the promise of cold hard cash in return.

This scam is very wisely thought out as well in that the average “Customer” will not readily look in his or her bank statement for the small charges. I know I ALWAYS check out the large charges before looking at anything else on the statement. It’s also a fact that most bank accounts are jointly owned by a significant other who you may assume has signed up for something without your knowing. Your average banking conglomerate would just assume write off a handful of measly $9.00 charges in favor of incurring legal fees to pursue the culprits for what would be deemed chump change to them. Meanwhile WLI continues to charge 100 to 500 thousand “Happy Customers” a month all the while adding one or two new “Happy Customers” for every discovered embezzlement and raking in the payday. It’s no coincidence that the only embezzlers that get caught are the ones who steal tens of thousands of dollars. they are obvious, WLI is obviously not.

Just another example of that good old fashioned American greed we see so much of these days. And by the way, you have to be a very special kind of crooked uncaring unfeeling and sad human being to willingly talk to probably thousands of customers day after day with the same stories of violation and not care about the fact the so many people have been robbed by your company. Oh well, it didn’t happen to you…. Right? Sweet dreams.

  36. Kit C. Oct 1

Got me too. Just got off the phone, got my refund and cancelled my “membership.” GameStop online shopping included a “complimentary” $10.00 coupon that I never used; turns out that the $10.00 coupon came with monthly $12.00 bills. Now I have to wait 3-5 business days to see if I get my refund.

  37. Jerry Oct 3

I was just looking up some information online on my credit card statement and noticed a recurring $10 charge by this company called Reservation Rewards. I hadn’t noticed this charge as my wife ordinarily pays the credit card bills. Neither of us could figure out what this charge related to so I called my credit card company and they suggested the best alternative was to cancel the credit card and they would send another one right away. A little inconvenient but it stopped the problem instantly. I then called Reservation Rewards phone number 800-732-7031 to complain about the charge and to request a refund. I must say they were quite cordial and said they would refund six $10 charges that had been put on my credit card. I asked the person how they got my credit card and she told me that it was result of a transaction with ShutterFly. I cannot recollect my transaction with ShutterFly, as I don’t have an account with them, but it is possible that I requested a photo that one of my children sent of the grandchildren.

Hi – thank you so much for the information. I just got off the phone from Reservation Rewards. They must have been receiving a tonne load of complaints (and threats!) as the first option when calling their 1800-732-7031 number is regarding charges made to one’s “account”. After purchasing flights with continental.com, I was offered $25 credit towards the next purchase with continental.com. I naively assumed that it was with Continental. WRONG! However, I never signed up for any monthly reward program.

I usually check my purchases every month, but haven’t for some time, 4 months to be precise. From July to October, my account was charged CAD12. Tricky buggers. I was quite fired up for the fight, but it was relatively easy, even with the feeble attempt to interest me in looking at more rewards (HAH!), or taking a second look at the membership benefits.

I hope they are shut down, but I feel this is nigh on impossible. I am going to tell everyone about this, and I am going to take it up with continental.com, as this is where the trail began for me.

Let’s hope that the web does prevent more fraud through useful resources such as your blog, than it assists through heartless scammers such as webloyalty/Reservation Rewards.

I bought a box of checks and got scammed by this! I did not click on anything but the information to order. Called and canceled. Let’s see if they charge me. They should be shut down! Never order from Current on line!

I called 18007327031 and explained to them that this was not authorized. It took about 5 minutes and I told I would be reimbursed in 3 days. Very Easy.

Zuka, this untrue. You can still get your money back! Call them back right now and give them the e-mail addres you used at the time. They can pull you with your e-mail or zip code. Could it be possible someone in your household bought something online and and the account is in their name??Just because they couldn”t find your account doesn”t mean it’s not there. It IS. I know this for sure. ASk to be transferred to Customer Care and demand your money back. They can also pull you up with the credit card number that was charged. Don”t be afriad to give it to them they already have it. Give just the last four numbers if you like. They HAVE TO REFUND YOU. I use to work for this scum bag comapny. Don’t give up call back.

I just got charged $12. from “CHECKCARD RESERVATIONREWARD 800-732-7031…” and I called the number and they said that if I used orbitz.com that is why I got my “reward”. Wtf? So I told them i have not used in Orbitz in over a year, and to refund my money and cancel whatever “membership” this is. The lady on the phone said she would do it and i would get my $12 back in 3 – 5 business days. Weird!

Notice that the earlier you get bit by these cretins the lower the monthly charge, the higher the charge the later. $12 is the “going” rate …. Ponzi anyone?

I just noticed a $12 charge from them on my bank account and realized that they have been charging me $12 a month for over a year. Apparently it was somehow connected with a movie ticket purchase on Fandango. I called the phone number listed with the charge, 8007327031, and spoke with someone to cancel and reverse the charges. At first he offered to cancel the “service” and refund the last charge. When I asked for a full refund of $132, he offered to refund the last 6 months and send me some sort of claim form for the rest. Apparently this company has been doing this for years. How have they been able to get away with this?

Same thing here, Just noticed reservation rewards charge me for 3 months, with $12/monthly without me knowing anything and never signed up with their product, and I just realized after 4 months since I haven’t have a chance to check my bank account. This is so annoying!!

  47. George Oct 24

Same thing still going on. I’ve found a $12 charge by reservation rewards for the past three months and Visa advised me to block my card and they will issue another to stop this. I am certain I never signed up for this and cannot contact them because I cannot call an 800 number from abroad where I live.

I too have been scammed by this company under their Reservation Rewards name. I signed up with Shutterfly.com and ordered pictures and when I processed everything they gave my credit card information to this company and have been taking $12 out of my account since December 2, 2008. They only refunded me back 6 months ourt of the 9 months and now I have to file all sorts of paperwork!

I just discovered the charge of $12.00 to reservations reward. I called, she said I charged the membership fee while at the tail end of “my purchase” with a website called FRAGRANCE X.com with my LIVE.COM email address. All bogus crap… never purchased from that website, nor do I have a LIVE.com email address. What’s funny is that this credit card was received just a few days prior to when the charge was made. Something’s funny going on. Nevertheless, she did say, along with a confirmation number, that they will reverse the charges and cancel the ‘membership’.
