Traverse City Film Festival

I’m in Traverse City, Michigan, for the weekend. Not only is Traverse City the Cherry Capitol of the Entire World, but this year they have for the first time a summer film festival·, organized in a hurry by Michael Moore· (who lives nearby) and friends. The festival has a great selection of films, including premier (or pre-American release) showings of Grizzly Man·, A Good Woman· (featuring Scarlett Johansson·) and Broken Flowers· (a Jim Jarmusch·film featuring Bill Murray· and — Julie Delpy·!).

Well, that’s enough linking for one day.

I’m envious – these look like great films! I’d like to hear what you think about them.

The story for Grizzly Man immediately reminded me of “Into the Wild” which the movie website goes on to mention in comparison. I can’t recommend this book highly enough. The author really captures the spirit of the real-life protagonist who embarks on an incredibly idealistic, and fateful, journey. (Great material for a film in its own right, imho.)

As far as Herzog as the director, his “Aguirre” and “Fitzcarraldo” are two of the greatest films I’ve ever seen — unparalleled, sweeping cinematography and yet deeply intimate views into complex, flawed characters.

Jarmusch is also one of my favorite directors, though the trailer for his flick doesn’t seem as promising as some of his other work — but what can you tell from a trailer anyway?
