Re: bacn. An explanation. That’s almost it, although bacn is apparently more like “solicited” spam (vs. unsolicited), whereas I’m thinking about unsolicited spam that is actually something you want to read.
Apparently I missed the bacn meme when it first emerged a few weeks ago.

There’s no difference between pertinent spam and real advertising. Almost all invasive marketing is “spam” to some degree. While I’ve never bought Viagra on a whim based on junk mail, I’ve certainly bought albums by the odd band whose street team have spammed a forum I was on. It’s all relative. I’m sure there are a few people with erectile dysfunction who thank their lucky stars for spam.

Writing comments that are on-topic in order to promote products is a common practice. Sites that offer advice on Internet marketting often suggest doing such things.
If the comment is on topic then why not? Does the motivation of the commenter (to contribute to the community, to rebut a bad idea, or to promote their own web site) affect the value of the comment?

I think I would distinguish between humans going out and promoting relevant links (commercial or non) and agents/robots identifying relevant content and posting such links. The former seems to me a fair practice — the latter, I think the jury is still out.
